For your convenience, here is a list of commonly used alterations/sewing terms with wedding gowns and women's formalwear.

Topstitch hem-stitching is visible from outside where you actually see the stitch line

Taffetta-medium weight, stiffer fabric that sounds crunchy when it moves

Mushroom hem-outside layer attaced to lining and gathered making outside layer "mushroom" or balloon

Bodice-Top of garment to the waist seam

Straps-can be thin to thick, they are sewn in but separate material and not a continuous part of the bodice

Sleeveless (Shoulders)-has an actual armhole where the part that goes over the shoulder is continuous fabric from the bodice
